So long and thanks for all the fish...Well, this will be the last post then as i move over to my shiny new wordpress blog. It's been fun! ta ta for now Finally; broadband is back!At last... Having moved house in AUGUST, Pipex have finally reconnected the broadband today. This must be some kind of record! Anyway, am complaining so won't go into detail, suffice to say it's just great to be back online World GISI was playing around with an application called World Wind, from NASA, a free viewer for their satellite data. Then came Google Earth, basically the same thing and then some! The first photo is a saved view from the NASA application showing Southampton, Portsmouth and the Solent (an area for which there is less data); the second photo shows an area of New York in Google Earth, complete with 3D buildings, roads and whatever other layers you want!
And for some fun, check out Google Moon - a map view of the lunar landings. Zoom right in to see what the moon is really made of
Validation finally sortedWell, i've sorted most of the validation problems with my uni site. Thankfully the EH site has been redesigned and no longer contains loads of illegal characters like ampersands (the source of many of the validation errors). I've just had to add a few alt tags for images and change a few unencoded ampersands. There's still an issue with a bit of script, but for the most part they are now valid XHTML Strict Office to use XMLMicrosoft are indeed adopting xml in a big way, not only for the OS with Longhorn or whatever it'll be called, but as the basis for Office file formats too. One of the developers, Brian Jones, has a blog on the subject. Hi5Just been pointed towards http://www.hi5.com, another community thing. Dunno if it's any good yet, but signed up anyway. It's very open in it's approach to browsing; you can cruise across social networks. If you interested, use this link http://www.hi5.com/i?l=KKHUBHR to let their system know i referred you. Damn validation! The soton pages, despite being created in Dreamweaver as xhtml don't validate - bugger. The template validates fine, it's just some of the content. It's little things like the use of ampersands (should be < rather than just &) and the English Heritage web links (which are just a pain in the a** anyway). Oh, and i missed a few Alt tags on images. Will have to do corrections over the next few days. University pages are up (finally!)I have finally battled through the wonders of layers and have a University of Southampton web presence again at http://www.soton.ac.uk/~pjc196 They will be growing as i get my existing work up and add new stuff as i do it. The site works fine in IE and is xhtml compliant, but FireFox cannot render it as it should be. Any ideas...? updates to siteAdded some nice pictures. If you like any of them, email me; i have the full size hi-res versions. A web presence at lastwell, having been driven mad by Layers in xhtml, here's a nice easy alternative! I've knocked this up in no time at all, and it's easy enough to stick some pictures up and a few other bits and bobs. |
